Every now and then, a movie comes along that reminds me of the beautiful obsession that is boating. In this article I’m going to explore my favorite boating and sailing movies, and tell you where you can buy or rent them.
The perfect storm
This is the story of the Andrea gail, a fishing vessel who’s crew push the weather and find themselves in the perfect storm. This movie is based on real life events.
Hunting sharks while floating on a boat. There is something about this classic movie that makes me want to head straight to my boat.
All is lost
A sailboat is rendered damaged and at the mercy of the sea. This is a story about survival and hope. The movie takes place on the water.
After their boat capsizes, a group of friends make the decision to swim to safety only to realize that a shark is stalking them.
The true story of a shipping vessel that is hijacked by Somali pirates. Tom Hankes puts on a great performance.
This movie chronicles the story of a couple who are accidently left behind in the water during a scuba diving excursion. The movie is about their struggle to survive in open water.
Open water 2
A group of friends on a sailboat realize that they forgot to bring down the re-boarding ladder after they jump in the water for a swim. Without a way to get back on the boat, the group struggles to survive.
Mathew Mcconaughey, and Kate Hudson go on a hunt for a lost treasure. This is a feel good movie with lots of boat scenes.
A school sailing trip encounters a storm, which forces the student to learn discipline and team work.
A sailers dream is crushed when a tradgity strikes his family. Charlie played by Zac Efron, has to find a way to get his life back on track.
Pirates of the Caribbean
These films chronicle the life and adventures of Jack Sparrow, the pirate captain. Although the first Pirate of the Caribbean movie is my favourite, you really can’t go wrong with any one of them. The movies have a lot of exotic boating scene mostly filmed in the Caribbean’s.
This animated kids movie is so well done that it will not entertain the sailer in anyone. It follows the story of younge girl who sails the sea to restore life to the ocean.
Fishpeople: Documentary (Netflix)
This is a neat documentery about people who are pationate about the ocean. It takes you through the life of several.
Jago: Documentary (Netflix)
follows the life of a deep sea hunter in Indonesia. High definition filming mostly done under water.
Whether you’re waiting for the boating season to come around or you just want an entertaining movie/documentary to watch, you can’t go wrong with any titles listed here.
